We, the undersigned higher education students and alumni, declare our intent not to work for your companies as long as you continue to underwrite and invest in the fossil fuel sector, the top contributor to climate change. This stems from our concern about the climate crisis and its disproportionate impact on young people, low-income communities and communities of color, and our desire to work for companies that demonstrate genuine efforts to minimize harm to the planet and its inhabitants.

It is our view that insurers, as society’s risk managers, should fulfill their potential to accelerate the transition to a decarbonized economy that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions rather than continuing to fuel the climate crisis by underwriting fossil fuels.

We recognize the severe economic, social, and environmental consequences of allowing an average global temperature increase to surpass 1.5°C. Your companies’ decisions to continue to insure and invest in the fossil fuel sector directly contradicts the actions needed to mitigate the climate crisis and to protect long term economic stability, protect public health, uphold Indigenous rights, and prevent massive biodiversity loss.

As the incoming workforce, we look forward to bringing our talents, creativity, and enthusiasm. However, our generation will be most affected by climate change and we don’t want our professional energy and efforts to contribute to it. You have an opportunity to lead by example but currently there is a significant gap between your stated commitments to sustainability and your business practices. We aren’t interested in working for companies that refuse, at the bare minimum, to stop contributing to the problem.

We urge you to do the following:
 
1. Exclude fossil fuel companies and projects, prioritizing immediate exclusion of new and expansion projects, from your underwriting and investments, thereby aligning more closely with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

2. Implement transparent, measurable, and ambitious strategies for reducing your carbon footprint and increase support for renewable energy and sustainable projects.

3. Engage in open dialogue with stakeholders, including communities directly affected by your insureds’ energy infrastructure activities, as well as future generations of the workforce, on environmental policies and commitments, demonstrating a genuine partnership in addressing climate change.

As concerned citizens and as the workforce of tomorrow, we are deeply invested in the health of our planet, our global economy, and the legacy of the companies with which we choose to associate. We believe in the power of corporate leadership to effect meaningful change and urge you to take decisive action. Until significant progress is made, we will look elsewhere for employment opportunities, prioritizing organizations that share our commitment to a healthy, equitable, and sustainable future.

How we use the data you enter on this form

Do Gooder (the advocacy platform powering this online action) processes personal information from you that you enter on this form so that we can provide the functions and related services to you and The Campaigner (the organisation responsible for this online action) for their legitimate purposes, including possibly exporting it to other systems, and to effectively respond to enquiries and communications related to those services.

These providers are bound by contract to only use personal information on our behalf, in accordance with agreed terms. While the privacy laws of the country in which personal information is stored or transferred may be different from those in your country, we will always have safeguards in place when storing or transferring personal information. We will never sell, rent, loan or in any other way pass your information on to other parties other than to provide this service to you and The Campaigner.
